Team captains help build strong foundation for the Varsity Football team. Varsity football captain says that the foundation and trust help ”get towards that goal of success” Noah Matthews said.
Leaders provide structure and meaning to any group of people who share a common goal. The football captains also provide a sense of identity and school pride for the team as a whole.
“Everyone on the team is going to do their 1/11th.” Matthews said and stated it will positively benefit the defense and the team’s season going forward.
The term 1/11th is used to refer to the fact that all 11 of the players on the defense will put in the same amount of effort to benefit the team and the outcome of the game. Preparation also helps players maximize their efficiency in practice and on the field when using the 1/11th method.
“Coach Park and Coach Maust: they were the ones who sat me down and talked me through things and taught me how to watch film” Matthew said.
Matthews shared that they also helped with his “attitude and just taught me how to be a better person and a better man.” Coaches often tend to define who a player becomes as a person.
“My first friend was a guy who played football and he wanted me to join the team and I’ve been playing since second grade with the same guys.” Matthew’s said.
Friendships can often shape the passion for sports that people develop at a young age.
“Receiver, because I mean I know what every DB’s tendency is cause been playing DB my entire life. So if I was a receiver I would know how to get the DB” Matthews said when asked which position would you rather play and why. This answer may have been chosen due to the similar skill sets that it takes to be a defensive back and a receiver.
Despite the defense struggling for most of the season many people including me believe that Noah Matthews leadership and motivation will better provide a sense of hope and courage that the team needs.
“Make sure that the guys aren’t doing anything stupid in the Lunchroom or the classroom. I have to make sure that the guys know all about the practice times and report times for games and let them know which uniforms to wear. And uh just making sure all of them are in line.” Matthews said about the responsibilities of being a captain for the team are.
These responsibilities help the younger players build accountability and make them better people which can often positively impact the team years in advance.
The principles of responsibility and trust have seemed to help the team. The 55-21 win showed a much more natural and well run defense that was much more aggressive in the pass and run game. Their ability to stop other teams from having big pass plays had been a large factor to the teams 1-3 record. The team’s much better defensive execution will be a trend that follows throughout the season.
