Lady Cougars work their magic, spiking, setting and serving balls in the face of the competition. This year’s varsity volleyball squad started off with a bang.
The ladies immediately built confidence with four wins in the first tournament of the season against Nimitz (2-0), Faith West (2-0), Lamar (2-0) and Alief Hastings(3-0).
“The beginning of our season was great. I was so excited to have multiple victories.” sophomore labero Hannah Kirk said.
However, the ladies experienced their first loss to Fort Bend Austin the next day, and losses to Foster and Fort Bend Dulles followed.
“After a loss we realized that as a team, we all have to be focused,” senior captain Kennedy Reid said. “We know it takes everyone on the team giving their all in every practice and game to be successful.”
And they did get in the right mindset because the girls brought it back in a 2-0 victory over Terry in their next game. The team suffered a few more losses, but began their district season on a high note with a 3-0 win over Mayde Creek and a 3-2 win over rival Seven Lakes.
“There have been some ups and downs,” Reid said. “But after our win against Seven Lakes, it’s clear there has been some good improvement and we are going to continue to get better throughout district.”
One defining aspect of this year’s squad is their camaraderie. Reid made it clear that it is one of the “closest” teams she has played on.
“It’s really fun being part of a team that’s really close off the court,” Reid said “It’s like constantly being with 14 of your best friends.”
The girls will take on Katy at home on Friday, September 30 at 5:30 p.m.
The regular season will end with another match- up against Katy, this time at Katy, on Tuesday, October 25 at 5:30 p.m.
