With the girls’ team already advanced to State, the varsity boys’ golf team teed up with no intentions of disappointing.
The boys’ team placed first at the Region III-5A Golf Tournament, for the first time, at Eagle Pointe Golf Club on April 20-21, with a two-day team score of 618.
Cinco Ranch medaled two freshmen—first place Connor Black (74-73) and Michael Cotton (74-74) who tied for second. Other scores are: seniors Scott Newell (76-78) and Jake Leatherwood (80-89), and junior Dylan Reynolds (88-93).
The team won first place four strokes ahead of second place Clements.
After the first round, Cinco Ranch stood atop the leaderboard by eight strokes, and although they dropped on the second round by ten strokes, they were still ahead of the competition and won regional champions.
The boys will join the girls’ varsity team, who placed second just two days before led by junior Abby Newton, who placed first at the tournament.
“[The girls winning] hyped us up a lot,” Cotton said. “But it also added some pressure to be holding the trophy at the end of the tournament.”
Both teams will compete at state on May 12-13, at Austin’s Jimmy Clay Golf Course.
“All of us are very excited to go to state,” Cotton said. “Making it meant the world to us.”
