Basketball player dies in auto accident

Members of the Katy community gather at a candlelight vigil in memory of junior Chris Saiz.

Varsity basketball player Chris Saiz, a junior, died following injuries sustained in a single-car accident the night of Dec. 20.

Saiz was a passenger in the car driven by senior Derrick Jones, also a varsity basketball player. Jones lost control of the car and the vehicle hit a tree on Mason Road near Fry Road, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Jones sustained minor injuries and was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Katy, while Saiz was life-flighted to Memorial Hermann in the Houston medical center. He did not survive the night.

Social networking sites have been filled with messages and prayers for Saiz, Jones and their families. Students also erected a makeshift memorial at the site of the accident.

A candlelight vigil was held at 7 p.m. on Dec. 21 in front of the Cinco Ranch High School competition gym.

A memorial service for Saiz was held Friday, Dec. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at Second Baptist Church in Katy.
