The quiz bowl team will hold a recruitment meeting on Tuesday, August 30 in room 2602 from 2:45-3:30 pm. They will explain how the club works in practice and competitions.

“We will talk about how the club is run, how we are going to do it, and bring the new [members] up to speed,” quiz bowl sponsor Robert Diethrich said.

Quiz bowl is an academic competition where two teams of four compete. Officials ask a toss-up question that anyone from either team

could buzz in and answer. The quicker you answer, the more points are awarded to your team. If you get the answer right, your team will get a multi-part bonus question for extra points. The team with the most points wins.

The club practices 2 times a week during 3.5 and after school, studying the four main subjects that officials ask at competitions.

“The big four [subjects] tend to be literature, science/math, history, and art and music,” Diethrich said. “There [is also] very little of what we call pop culture.”

Quiz bowl teams compete in 8 tournaments both in and out-of-state tournaments. The quiz bowl A and B teams made it to the finals last year.

“[B team] finished 175th out of 270, which for a B team is not shabby,” Diethrich said. “They beat some good teams. Our A team finished in 10th place nationally…We lost to the eventual champions.”

Before 2019, the quiz bowl club only had one team of four members, Diethrich said. However, the club focused on recruiting last year and amounted to a total of 18 members, allowing them to create a B and C team.

“Our goal this year is to put three teams in nationals and have a solid junior varsity team,” Diethrich said.
