Sophomore Ashley Coleman advanced as Reserve Grand Champion for her painting titled “Coffee Cow” in the Rodeo Art Auction. Her artwork will be up for bid on Mar. 13 at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Each year, students are assigned the task of creating rodeo art that is realistic and photograph-based. Students kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible to enter and can have their art placed in auction if chosen. Coleman’s painting was done almost entirely done in coffee.

“I used two kinds of coffee, instant and ground, and watercolor pencil for the darker areas,” Coleman said.

She started out originally with the coffee as an experiment, but later decided to actually use it for her rodeo project.

“I would rather do abstract than realism, and I’m really glad that this year I could do a little abstract,” Coleman said.

Coleman’s piece is one of the top 12 lots in the art auction this year in Rodeo.
