Following their first place district finish on April 4, the girls’ varsity golf team placed first at the Class 5A Region III Tournament for the first time in school history while the defending champion boys’ team finished in second, winning a bid for the state tournament.
Individually, seniors Abby Newton and Megan Webster and sophomore Kenndy Ishee placed in the top ten overall. Seniors Morgan Galloway and Kirsten Hensley, and freshman alternate Sarah Yi will also accompany them to state.
Due to weather constraints, the girls were only able to play one day rather than two, but still finished with a score of 313, a 15 stroke lead over second place Bellaire.
The boys’ team was able to play both days and came in a close second to Travis by a difference of two strokes. Still, the team of senior Dylan Reynolds, junior Matt McClung, sophomores JD Kiesewetter and Michael Cotton, freshman Kyle Rogers, and alternate sophomore Nick Brown will be joining the girls at state for the second year in a row.
Both teams will leave for Austin on April 29 and compete at Jimmy Clay Golf Course from April 30–May 1.
