The National Merit Scholarship program has been recognizing high achieving academic students since 1955. Of the 1.6 million students that take the PSAT their junior year, only 16,000 advance to the semifinals. Semifinalists are chosen on a state-representational basis, only the highest scoring students of each state receive this honor. To be considered for a National Merit scholarship, students must advance to the Final round. Finalists will be announced in February 2020.
