The Cinco Ranch wrestlers competed at the UIL State Wrestling Championship on Feb.13 and 14 where they wrestled against other high school qualifiers.
Among those who attended, junior Ricky Regas was named state champion with his 1-0 win against Allen High School.

“I felt more relieved than anything,” Regas said, “there was a lot of anticipation for that match, and after winning I was just happy that the season was over and I was undefeated.”

Regas is also looking into universities to enroll in when he graduates next year in order to continue wrestling.

“I’m looking at Northern Colorado and Colorado Western along with a couple of other northern schools,” Regas said, “but there’s no major influence, I’m leaving my options open for the school that has the most to offer me.”

Senior Ashley DeLeon followed suit as runner up and she was recognized as the first girls all state wrestler for the department.

UIL concluded the wrestling season for this year and the coaches are pleased with the outcome.

“Many wrestlers did have great seasons, and with the crowning of our 12th state champion, also adding to our long list of A State wrestlers, we are overall very pleased,” Head wrestling coach Bill Dushane said.

Although season is over, wrestlers will use the off season time to prepare themselves for next year.
