Katy ISD open to new stadium namesake nominations

With a brand new stadium in the works, Katy ISD will provide a versatile, cost effective addition to the district, as per its 2014 bond. The district is now open to nominations for the official naming of the facility, which will be available for use in the upcoming school year. All submissions due by 4 p.m. on February 17.

“Katy ISD’s stadium complex will be unique in that it will be the only venue in Texas with two operational stadiums located next to each other,” said the Katy ISD Communications Department. “As such, it opens up the opportunity to host non-traditional events that have the potential to attract visitors and revenue to the Katy area.”

According to Katy ISD Communications Department, if you are interested in submitting a facility name, you must fill out the Nomination for Naming a New School or Facility form, as well as review the Katy ISD Board Policy for specific naming guidelines.

“It is recommended that nominations be made with a written statement containing biographical data, significant contributions, and a statement of why a school or facility should be named after the person,” said the Communications Department.

Aside from a namesake, this gives people a way to cement their legacy.

“There is nothing more gratifying than being a part of the celebrations of learning and accomplishments that are an ongoing part of the tradition of excellence that has been established,” said Bonnie Holland, the namesake of Bonnie Holland Elementary. “At times, I function as a cheerleader or encourager. At other times I enjoy reading to students, attending special events, or simply observing students and staff as they go about their work.”

Not only do the namesakes benefit, but the students are presented with a prime example of a leader and trailblazer of the community.

“I was in elementary school at the time,” said Grace Mulry, former Williams Elementary student, “and [James Williams] came to our school for its tenth anniversary. I remember that we had to perform a song for him, and then he shook each of our hands. I thought it was pretty cool at the time, because he seemed so important, and his namesake further proved that.”

If you would like to apply, submit the Nomination for Naming a New School or Facility form and all supplementary materials (any printed resources such as news clippings or photos that would assist the board in making a decision) via email at [email protected], or by mail to
